The Group of Friends for enhanced civil society participation in UNEP-led events is an informal platform established in 2024 to strengthen inclusive engagement between member nations and civil society.

  • Welcome and a quick recap of the meeting’s objectives, with a special note for new participants.
  • Any urgent updates or pressing concerns before moving into the main agenda.

Brainstorm discussion: How to structure stakeholder engagement during UNEA-8?

  • The Co-Chairs will introduce this discussion item by looking back at how stakeholder engagement was structured at UNEA-7 and comparing that to other intergovernmental processes under the UNEP umbrella.
  • Following this introduction, the Co-Chairs will open the floor for participants to exchange views on how meaningful stakeholder engagement could look like during UNEA-8.
  • Guiding questions:
    • In your view, what would meaningful stakeholder engagement look like in practice?
    • What would you consider to be best practices in intergovernmental fora regarding stakeholder engagement?
    • What elements would you like to take from other stakeholder engagement processes you know to be integrated into UNEA-8?
