About the Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly (WHA77)

The Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly (WHA77) — the decision-making body of the World Health Organization that meets annually in Geneva — will kick off on Monday 27 May 2024 after the Sunday 26 May 2024 traditional Walk the Talk: Health for All Challenge healthy kickstart event. Held this year under the theme “All for Health, Health for All“, WHA77 offers an occasion to put the spotlight on and advance action on environmental health issues and is expected to conclude on 1 June 2024.

Climate Change and Health

The cumulative effects of climate change, disease outbreaks and conflict mean ever more pressure on WHO to respond to the world’s health needs,”

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General

WHA77 set new ambitions for the Member States and the WHO in the area of climate and health with the adoption of a dedicated Resolution on climate change and health, as well as the approval on 28 May of WHO’s 2025–2028 strategy, GPW 14 with the response to climate change being selected as one of its six key strategic objectives.

The Climate Change and Health resolution, initially proposed as a draft decision for WHA77 adoption by Barbados, Fiji, Kenya, Monaco, Netherlands, Peru, United Arab Emirates and United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 154th session of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization held last January, was adopted on 31 May 2024.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Health

A new resolution on antimicrobial resistance to mobilize action initially tabled by Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Ecuador, Egypt, the European Union and its 27 Member States, Georgia, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Oman, Panama, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and United States of America was approved on 30 May 2024. The resolution welcomes WHO strategic and operational priorities to address drug-resistant bacterial infections in the human health sector (2025–2035), with the four strategic priorities of: prevention of infections; universal access to affordable, quality diagnosis and appropriate treatment of infections; strategic information, science and innovation; and effective governance and financing of the human health sector response to AMR.  The resolution urges Member States to apply these priorities and implement the core package of country-level interventions through their AMR national action plans and requests the Director-General to provide a status update and guidance to countries in preparation for the HLM on AMR.
