Headquartered in Geneva, the mission of the Green Cross is to promote environmental security and sustainable development through an integrated approach that links peace, human well-being, and the responsible management of natural resources.
Green Cross International (GCI) was founded in 1993 by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mikhail Gorbachev to address the interconnected challenges of environmental degradation, conflict, and poverty. Working across regions through its national organizations, GCI convenes governments, civil society, and the private sector to advance dialogue, a spirit of cooperation, and practical solutions to global challenges.
GCI’s work is structured around key program pillars, including environmental security and sustainability, water and resource management, social and medical support, value change through education, and climate and energy. Guided by ethical principles reflected in frameworks such as the Earth Charter, GCI develops initiatives that strengthen local capacities, prevent resource-related conflicts, and support policy and behavioral change. Through field-based action and international advocacy, GCI contributes to long-term, systemic solutions that advance resilience, equity, and sustainability.
