2025 Meetings of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions
The 2025 meetings of the Conference of Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions kick off this week in Geneva, under the theme “Make visible the invisible: sound management of chemicals and wastes”. More than 2,000 delegates are registered to attend the two-week-long meetings, which will include a high-level segment on 30 April and 1 May 2025, and a fair from 29 April to 2 May 2025. Many of the 54 side events can be followed online. → Follow the live coverage from the Earth Negotiation Bulletin and other useful information in our update on the meetings
The Geneva Environment Network will take part in the 2025 Meetings of the BRS COPs with a booth featuring multilateral Geneva making visible the invisible crisis of chemical, waste and pollution and organizing, co-organizing and supporting various side events. The team is also supporting the secretariat on specific activities. This week, join the team at:

World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2025
Observed every 28 April since 2003, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work stresses the importance of preventing accidents and diseases at work, capitalizing on the ILO’s traditional strengths of tripartism and social dialogue. The 2025 edition of the celebration will shed light on how new technologies are transforming Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), including through the automation of tasks, use of smart OSH tools and monitoring systems, extended reality and virtual reality and algorithmic management of work. As highlighted in the recently released report Revolutionizing health and safety: The role of AI and digitalization at work, digitalization and automation are transforming millions of jobs worldwide, creating powerful opportunities to enhance occupational safety and health. Automation and smart monitoring systems can reduce exposure to hazardous environments, enhance workplace safety by identifying hazards, monitoring environmental conditions and predicting equipment failures. For instance, robots can perform tasks that present inherent environmental health risks to human such as collecting toxic waste, spraying pesticides, working in contaminated and dusty environments or in high-temperature environments. However, the report highlights that workers responsible for maintaining or repairing these machines may be exposed to new safety, health and chemical risks making proactive and adaptive policy responses. → Read more in ILO Press Release.
To mark the day, ILO will host a live event bringing together ILO constituents and international experts to explore how AI and digitalization are reshaping OSH systems across sectors and countries. → Join the discussion on ILO Live on 28 April 2025 from 13:30 to 15:00 CEST.

Pope Francis’ Environment Legacy | Everything is Connected
Following the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, 21 April, aged 88, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recalled that “Pope Francis understood that protecting our common home is, at heart, a deeply moral mission and responsibility that belongs to every person,” noting that his second Encyclical – Laudato Si – was a major contribution to the global mobilisation that resulted in the landmark Paris Agreement on climate change. In Laudato Si’, which he released prior to the UN Climate Conference in Paris (COP21), the Pope called indeed for all people, not just Catholics, to pay more attention to the frailty of both our planet and its people. As the Pope has put it, in an understated phrase that sums up the entire spirit of the document: “Everything is connected.” An article published in 2019 in the journal Biological Conservation, found that Laudato si’ led to a worldwide increase in interest in environmental issues – especially prominent in, but not restricted to, Catholic countries. A follow-up exhortation, Laudate Deum, was released in October 2023, ahead of the UN Climate Conference in Dubai (COP28). Building on the 2015 encyclical, he said we’re not reacting enough and close to breaking point. He criticised climate change deniers, saying that the human origin of global warming is now beyond doubt. And described how care for our common home flows from the Christian faith.
Laudato si’ had a significant impact on Catholic environmental activism. It gave rise to the Laudato Si’ movement, which coordinates environmental activism across the globe. It has 900 Catholic organisations as well as 10,000 of what are known as Laudato Si’ “animators”, who are all ambassadors and leaders in their respective communities. The Laudato Si’ Research Institute at Campion Hall, Oxford, was also launched in 2019, seeking to provide intellectual foundations for a reordering of society toward care for the earth and care for the poor. Other catholic organisations — including Caritas Internationalis, the Catholic Church’s charitable arm — expanded their work on environmental questions.
Other statements include UN climate chief Simon Stiell who said “Pope Francis has been a towering figure of human dignity, and an unflinching global champion of climate action as a vital means to deliver it,” adding that Pope Francis “had a deep working knowledge of complex climate issues, and his leadership brought together those most powerful forces of faith and science to deliver unimpeachable truths, highlighting the costs of the climate crisis for billions of people.” Read more at:
